Lot #2063. *Early Original First Type Shansei Broomhandle Semi-Automatic Pistol

Description: Serial no. 3223, .45 ACP cal., 5-1/2" barrel, blue finish, tangent sight incremented from 100-1000 yards, 16-groove and bordered mahogany grips. Considered an officially made Chinese copy which has long fascinated collectors, this model is chambered for .45 ACP, with no more than 8000 mfg'd.  The translation of the markings indicate that they were made at the Shansei Province Arsenal in 1929.  Since many thousands of Thompson machine guns in .45 ACP were already in use in China, it is not surprising that the Chinese should choose to copy the popular 1896 Mauser in this caliber.  (See Pages 219-224, of the Breathed & Schroeder book, entitled "System Mauser".)
Condition: Excellent. Retaining approx. 96% original Chinese rust blue. Grips retain approx. 95% original factory varnish. Action is crisp, bore is excellent. Formerly in the Sidney Aberman collection and not in any way to be confused with later copies or re-worked examples.
Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000
