Rare 10 Gauge Nichols & Lefever A Grade Hammer Double Barrel Shotgun Two Barrel Set

Serial No. 5808. 10 ga., 21-7/8" and 29-7/8" damascus barrels both with fore-ends, smooth damascus extended ribs with locking doll's head. Ribs marked: Nichols & Lefever, Syracuse, NY. Case-hardened action with bar action rebounding locks, push forward top tang mounted push forward release. Watertable marked: A. Action 40% engraved with fine foliate scroll with a fox on the underside; triggerguard with a hunter and a dog retrieving a duck. Sculptured locks full engraved with fine foliate scroll and small game scenes of dogs, grouse and woodcock. Sculpted hammers with rain shields. Percussion fences. Locks marked: A and Nichols & Lefever. Finely checkered pistolgrip stock of figured walnut with scalloped borders. Engraved sculptured steel grip cap. Vacant gold oval. Checkered horn buttplate. Finely checkered splinter fore-ends with horn tip and push button release.

Very good, showing considerable use. Metal shows a silver patina. 22" barrels show denting and out of round at the muzzles with some uneven surfaces. Barrels have been shortened. Bores show frosting and light marks. 30" barrels show heavy frosting and light marks. Exterior shows some marks. Action shows a silver patina. Engraving is well-defined especially on the locks. Action and barrels show looseness. Stock shows wear to finish and checkering with scratches, nicks and impressions. Checkering is pattern only. 22" barrel fore-end shows light wear with well defined checkering with nicks and impressions. 30" barrel fore-end shows wear and the checkering is pattern only. Fore-end horn tip shows a repair. |
